Why Medication Safety is Critical for Seniors
As we age, the body becomes more sensitive to medications, which makes seniors more vulnerable to harmful drug interactions and side effects. Many caregivers aren't fully aware of just how dangerous even the most common medications can be for older adults when taken incorrectly or combined with others.
According to the National Institute on Aging, seniors are more likely to experience side effects because the body's ability to break down medications slows with age. This can result in dangerous drug buildup, putting seniors at risk of adverse effects like confusion, falls, and even organ damage. For example, medications such as anti-anxiety drugs, certain antidepressants, and pain relievers can cause dizziness or drowsiness, increasing the risk of falls.
What You Can Do to Ensure Medication Safety
Managing your senior’s medications doesn’t have to be complicated, but it does require some planning and attention to detail. To help you get started, I’ve compiled a few key practices that can make a big difference:
1. Create and Maintain a Medication List
One of the simplest but most effective things you can do is maintain a comprehensive medication list. This list should include the name, dosage, and frequency of every medication your senior is taking. Don't forget to include over-the-counter medications, vitamins, and supplements, which can sometimes interact negatively with prescribed drugs.
In my free 9-page PDF, I provide a Medication Chart that makes it easy for caregivers to keep track of medications and monitor any changes. This chart is simple to fill out and can be a lifesaver in emergencies or doctor visits.
2. Talk to the Pharmacist for prescription cost-saving strategies
Your pharmacist is one of the most underutilized professionals when it comes to medication safety. Pharmacists are trained to spot potential drug interactions and can often recommend cost-saving alternatives. In my guide, you’ll find 5 Key Questions to Ask Your Pharmacist, including:
- Are there any possible side effects from taking these medications together?
- Are there cheaper generic alternatives available?
By asking these questions, you can potentially save money while ensuring your senior’s safety.
3. Review Medications with the Doctor Regularly
Regular medication reviews with ALL your senior’s doctors are essential. Ask about the necessity of each medication and whether there are non-drug alternatives for managing certain conditions. Sometimes, a medication that was necessary a few years ago might no longer be needed, or there could be new, safer options available.
In my PDF, I offer a simple Medication Chart Analysis with Sample so you can keep track of which medications are essential, which might need adjustment, and when it’s time to bring up any concerns with the doctor.
4. Be Aware of Common Myths and Costly Mistakes
There are several myths surrounding medication use that can lead to costly and harmful mistakes. For example, many people believe that brand-name medications are always better than generics, but this isn’t true. According to the FDA, generic drugs are just as effective and safe as brand-name drugs and can save you significant amounts of money.
In my guide, I address 3 Common Medication Myths that often lead to unnecessary spending and potential side effects. Understanding these myths can help you make better decisions and protect your senior's health.
How to Save on Medications
Medication costs can be a significant financial burden for seniors, but there are several strategies to cut down on these expenses:
1. Consider Generic Medications
As mentioned earlier, generic medications are just as effective as their brand-name counterparts but are often significantly cheaper. Ask your doctor or pharmacist if a generic option is available for each of your senior's prescriptions.
2. Explore Prescription Assistance Programs
Many pharmaceutical companies offer programs to help seniors afford their medications. Additionally, organizations like the Partnership for Prescription Assistance offer free resources to help patients access discounted or free medications.
3. Check for Discounts and Coupons
You can often find discounts and coupons for prescriptions through websites like GoodRx or even by asking your pharmacist directly. It’s always worth checking whether your senior could be paying less. And don’t think that just because they are getting “warehouse” prices, these are the least expensive. I’ve seen warehouses increase their prices over time. Soon, they are more expensive than your local pharmacies. Pharmacy prices go up and down faster than food products on any given day.
I asked one pharmacist to fax over her list of free medications I could use. She said, “Oh we don’t do that anymore. We switch out medication prices every day depending on how much a doctor is prescribing it.” “Wait, what?”, I said, “So if the doctor is stuck on one drug and really likes it?” Yes, she said, “it is no longer free. Management automatically increases the price.”
